Default Spitfire for Sand Bass on Sunday, 1/20/08

The Sunday forecast was looking pretty nice. I read the Spitfire was getting live squid for bait, and the sand bass were chewing, so when some friends called and asked if I wanted to join them on Sunday I said “Yes!”.

We weren’t the only one encouraged by the forecast and reports… we lined up for the Spitfire with 35 regulars and waited to get on while the Deep Hole passengers disembarked a little before our 6:00 AM departure. After the boat got a quick scrub down by the crew, we were ready to board!

Our crew for today: Captain Craig at the helm, Morgan and Bobby on deck, and Derrick in the galley. They still had a good load of squid, so we were off to points north to search for sand bass!

The weather was beautiful, with flat calm seas, and crystal clear skies. We had almost no wind, and no swell, and by 10:00 the heavy jackets we had all boarded with were piling up in the galley!!

We only made a few moves the whole day, and had a nice steady pick at the sandbass, with a few miscellaneous others in the mix. In the end, 35 anglers landedd 184 sand bass, 7 calicos (with many more released), 1 triggerfish, and 14 sculpin.

A couple of nice sand bass.

You can see here how nice the weather was by afternoon. Not bad for January, huh? Eat your hearts out you cold weather folks!

My friend Kenny with a couple of his sandies...

And here's the trigger fish I caught... It was GOOD!

As usual, a great time on the Spitfire! The boat was clean, the crew, as always, friendly and helpful! Derrick fixes up some great breakfasts and burgers, and a menu with other selections available as well.

Thank you once again to the Spitfire crew for a great trip!

There IS life after the rock fish season closes! The sand bass are on the chew! Get out and enjoy a great day of fishing!!

The Spitfire runs ¾ day trips most weekdays and weekends, but call ahead as they do frequently run charters. They’re also running frequent trips to the “Deep Hole” when weather permits. Call Redondo Sportfishing for reservations or details at (310) 372-2111.

Nice report SeaHag! I really do need to get out there. Sounds like the conditions were perfect last Sunday.
