Default Sum Fun Afternoon Laguna Bassin' 11/23/08

Original plan was to go on the Spitfire, but dad woke up with a huge headache, so that was out of the question. Good news is that we got an extra 3-4 hours of sleep, and we decided to drive down to Dana Point for the 12:45 afternoon 1/2 day.

Got down to the landing and got situated, and boarded around 12:15. Today was a Kids Club Seminar hosted by Captain Chris Pica, who did a heck of a job teaching the kids the proper techniques for what we were doing. Joined by me and my dad were Vance and Old/New Shimano Rep Mark Mills. Vance and I fished a little bit while the seminar was going on, to give part in the seminar about the different types of fish (okay, not exactly, but something had to pass the time!). After the seminar was over, we were off to the races.

First stop was Salt Creek, where the mackerel ate us alive. At least it kept things exciting, but we had to find real fish. So, we moved up north. The mackerel were again automatic here, but soon, the bass began to bite. I dropped down a live sardine on the loop, and got hammered right away, for a nice legal grumpy. Didn't get bit again, so I moved to the leadhead with squid. It was every single cast, but they were all short. We did manage to get some nice ones, including my dad, who got a contender calico, which was tanked. With that bite slowing down, we moved up north to our final spot.

Nothing very much happening at the last spot. I got a couple of starries, a treefish, and a little goat, but that was about it. A couple of nice treefish came over, and more mackerel. Just as we were pulling anchor, Mark got hooked up, and brought in a 3# sculpin. Dad got beat out, but at least the money went to the crew (Me, Dad, Mark, and Vance were the only ones in the JP, so it would have went to the crew anyway). Fishing was so-so, but at least we had some action. Mother Winter isn't here yet!!

Took a few pictures, but I wasn't in a real mood today.
