Default Big Albies - Pacific Star Challenger’s Angling Club 9/15-16, Two Day Charter!

On a warm Friday evening, 25 members and guests of the Challenger’s Angling Club made their way down to Seaforth landing for our September charter.

As we all signed in at the office, we were greeted by our Captain for our 2 day trip, Mike Bullard of the Pacific Star. Mike was busy trying to get the current forecast for the offshore conditions, to determine our destination.

We were all on pins and needles waiting for the verdict! The offshore conditions had been pretty poor for the last few days. But finally Capt. Mike announce the forecast for Saturday was Green Flag conditions!

The plan: Head to the Butterfly Bank and see if we could find some offshore action. So, with Captain Mike at the helm, second Captain Chris, Jeff and David on deck, and Shane and Marty sharing galley duties, we boarded up, too attendance, and left the dock right on time!

After Mike checked out the selection of bait at the dock, he came back to the galley for a brief safety speech, and a quick summary of the plan for the weekend. After that, Jeff went into more details on the finer points of tuna fishing, and we were on our way.

It was pretty rough seas heading out! Early morning I heard the engines shut down to troll speed at around 7:00 AM, and went to check it out. Breakfast was pulled beef and egg burritos, and while the looked like they may have been pretty good, the rough seas put me off a bit. I went back to sleep a while longer, and came back up around 10:00 for a poppy seed muffin. My timing seemed excellent, because just a few minutes later Mike told us to pull in the troll lines, we were coming up on a school of jumpers!

In the next hour, we landed 31 nice albacore, most in the 20-30 pound range, so I opted to fish my 25# outfit. My second bait out I hooked up, and immediately began to question my choice of gear. I found myself a little concerned with by the trouble I was having with this fish, but I understood when it was finally gaffed and dragged onto the boat. My first albacore of the day, which went on to be the JP fish, weighed in at 45 pounds, soaking wet!

Well, that ended up being our best stop of the day. A few more 2-3 fish stops, and we had one more pretty productive stop with 10 fish. End of day one: 55 good quality albacore, all on bait.

The weather did come down some during the day, but late afternoon the wind started to kick up again. The captain ran the boat down swell while we had a great roast pork and stuffing dinner, then put the sea anchor for the night, while we all dreamed of more albacore the next day.

But for our efforts the next morning, we pick up 5 more albacore, 4 on bait, one on the troll.

Honors for the trip have to go out to Joel Saucedo’s 9 year-old son, Ricky, who single handedly hooked and fought two nice sized albacore to the boat all by himself. He also got to lay claim to the only troll fish of the trip.

And what a nice trip it was! With a really light load and group of good friends, we really had a nice weekend! With a couple of hand-off fish, everyone got to catch at least one albacore, and we all had a really good time.

We would like to thank the crew of the Pacific Star for another wonderful trip! Challenger’s Angling club was established in 1953 on the premise that good fellowship means good fishing. We have monthly limited load charters on weekends out of the LA area harbors, and occasionally out of San Diego. Please send inquiries to our Membership Chairman, E-mail.

In the end, I had four fish, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd biggest fishes on the trip. The captain and deckhands got quite a kick out of that. Here's a more "average" sized fish....

My friend KennyMac caught two fish himself, and handed off two more hooked fish. As a result, everone on the trip got at least one fish. It's a great way to help make it a good trip for everyone...

I know, sorry!! I'll play around with them when I have a minute and see if I can get them smaller... I've never had that happen before.

I invested in one of those "Food Saver" systems a few years ago. Don't go fishing without one!

4-5 meals worth in there. A big bag of fillets in the freezer to smoke this weekend. The rest got passed out to friends and co-workers. There's nothing like FRESH fish. I always try to share the wealth, and only put in the freezer what I think I can go through before I think I'd have the opportunity to get more...!

Last spring I canned some yellowtail. (Glass jar type home canning.) I make sandwiches out of it just like you'd use canned tuna to make tuna salad. Great stuff!!
