Default Lobster Mobster! Season Opener and Dive'n'Surf Tournament 9/29/07

I was invited to come along and share in the festivities of the annual “Lobster Mobster” Tournament put on by Dive’n’Surf, by my fishing buddy Julian. He was going out Friday night on his friend Ken’s boat out of Redondo Marina with another dive buddy, Cindy.

I met up with the three of them at the Marina at about 9:30 Friday night, September 28. Lobster season was set to open at 12:01 Saturday morning, and they wanted to be out and anchored on their spot by the breakwall at mid-night.

So we loaded the gear and were off under a nearly full moon, and a partly cloudy sky, at a little after 10:00. Even with the calm seas, it took a couple of tries to get a good, firm hold on anchor, and then we settled in to tell old lobster stories for a while. Within minutes we were surrounded by boats. Our group started suiting up at about 11:30, and was in the water and heading for the breakwall by a few minutes before mid-night.

It only took about 45 minutes, and here they were returning with their sacks full like children on Halloween! Under the watchful eye of the Harbor Rescue boat, including a Fish and Game officer, the hunters returned with their bags of goodies (randomly counted and measured by the game warden…)

With that, we headed back in to the dock, unloaded gear, and then up to Dive’n’Surf in Redondo for the weigh in and free t-shirts for all registered participants who weighed in a lobster. Julian had the big one of the group, weighing in at 4 ½ pounds, and his and Ken’s total take of seven each ran about 15 pounds!

The group was kind enough to send me home with four nice lobsters for a Saturday night dinner!

I’d really like to thank Julian, Ken, and Cindy for allowing me to share this annual event with them.
