I have seen the catfish bite all the way just before freezing temps. Mainly channels. The bigger species stay dormant during the winter time, but they have been caught also during those months.

As far as I know channels will stay active and feed, but very limited, and mostly during the day if there is a good sun going.

I usually stop catfishing somewhere at the end of october, but I am also from ohio.

As far as the original question. Look for temps in the sub 40's, then start fishing for something else. Again, just my experience.

Channel cats are caught through ice.

Blue cats on the Ohio river here seem to migrate up to us in winter.
I target blue cats in winter.

Big flathead in Ohio go dormant at about 60 degrees in lakes and 50 degrees in rivers.

My last trip the water temp in the lake I fished was 62.

I got one just before dark

And another after sunrise.

In between I got cold.
