Nice to hear the yellow fin are back! Seems like every summer (US) that the yellow fin take over the waters this time of year! Have you been to south point yet this time of year? Be prepared for rough seas! I have never had the privilage of catching a dorado there, I can only image! We did however have a sailfish trailing our boat one time, but that was the closest I can to anything but a wahoo or yellow fin!

The five pole hookups are always fun for yellowfin!

Seems like the boat captains there only know one way to fish though. And they get stubborn when you tell them to do something out of the norm! Just my 2 cents!

What have you been catching there lately? Any LCM trips?

Not really sure if it's illegal or not! I don't think it's illegal, just frowned upon! I'll give it a change here in a minute!

    Thumbs up Fishing so far!

Only been here a little over a month and got hooked up with a dedicated fisherman (Mike) from about the first week. We've been every weekend so far (usually 2X a weekend) except for one weekend that the small craft advisories drove us back in!
Been to South point and all the others even though we took a bit of a beating from the seas, still got a bruise from last weekend. We've been lucky with the wahoo and mahi-mahi. What we've really been looking for is the big tuna! Mike has actually caught three sailfish here so far and I bet before he leaves that number will be higher. The sharks are out as well. We've been lucky so far with not getting our catch chomped, others have not faired so well.
I've only run into 1 stubborn captain here but even he did everything right when it came down to the actual fishing.
As far as an LCM... haven't done one of those yet. Been too much fun on the ocean masters so far. The one day we did stop off South to bottom bottom fish, it was hot, I had been drinking the night before, boat started rolling..... well, I didn't lose my lunch but I did turn green!!! That day was a slow one and it consisted of 2 good sized wahoo's, some sweet lips and a couple of nice sized groupers for the whole boat.
So right now wahoo, dorado and tuna (both yellow and skipjack) seem to be running with the occasional barracuda.
I fear this place is going to ruin me, cheap charters and great fishing day in and day out!
So, time to get some coffee, put on some good sunscreen and head on down to the marina and go again!

    Smooth seas to all!

    Default Weekend catch

Well, it was a bit slow this weekend and this is what we caught over the weekend on half day charters. At $75.00 for a half day it still can't be beat!

    Default Looking forward

Hey guys. I just got my hard copy orders to DG to report in Dec. I am in Key West right now tearing up the Dolphin, Wahoo, Sails and Black Fins. I am looking for info on the DG fishing scene and what of my equipment I should bring. I will miss my boats but at least I have heard about the great fishing so I won't miss Key West too badly...

Man I miss being at that place. At seems every time we went out on the charter we brought in at least one fish head. Damn those sharks are ferocious. I could really enjoy some wahoo right about now. Enjoy your stay and post more pics if you get a chance.

A few things off the top of my head.....
    A good variety of skirts
    Small diameter braided leader cable
Selection of lures that you prefer, purple/green/orange are working pretty good right now.
    Good quality swivels
    Rigging gear (clamps etc)
    SUNSCREEN
    Hats
    Sunglasses (several pair)
Poles/reels line etc are all provided by MWR so no worries there!
Really not much else, the MWR here is one of the best I've seen.
Give me a yell if you have any questions....I'll post more pics soon

Well, I think i can cover a wide spectrum with the skirts and lures i have. So I should not bring my internationals or large spinners? What about butterfly jigs and such? How is the fishing from shore if i am not able to get out on a boat. Any and all info is appreciated since I plan on making most of my packout fishing gear. Who needs clothes?

Jigging while bottom fishing is the most effective way, and you don't need bait! So stock up on some nice size jigs! You can also get some dogtooth doing that! Keep up the fishing reports!

I would bring everything you might think you need simply because I would hate for you to get here and realize that you need it, and that it's not available here! Supplies are very very limited unless you utilize the Inet to have things sent and then it does take a while to say the least!
As far as fishing from shore.... I am, or was a dedicated surf/reef fisherman from Hawaii. Unless someone shows you some key places... it is extremely rough shore fishing here. Your best bet would be to get your motorboat qual here (free 2x classes) and use a mako to bottom fish or as we have done when a ocean master was not available and troll in the lagoon for Trevalli (spelling?) which is a lot of fun! the boat rental is only $7.00 an hour for the mako's and we have new deep sea trollers on their way as we speak!
If you think you might need it..... bring it!
Didn't go out last weekend (first for me since being here) but am heading out this sat and sun..... updates to follow and your questions are always welcome!!!!

    Default Saturday's catch

Besides 3 Skipjack (Aku) nothing was hitting in the afternoon so we trolled in the shallows and made it a blue fin Trevally (Omilu) day.

more later on after today's trip.... (boy, it is overcast this Sunday morning!)

I am Navy. I will be the Fuels Officer there. I was an OS1 prior to commisioning and was born and raised in North FL commercially fishing and shrimping. Needless to say, I love to be on the water and fish. I hear the only downside there is not being able to get lobster but I suppose i will live. I am trying to get all my gear together before I leave so any advice is greatly appreciated. I am into almost any type of fishing (light tackle, jigging, bottom and trolling) so i have alot of equipment already. I just dont want to miss anything. Any specific lures or types? I have a ton but all geared towards florida fishing (wahoo, kings, dolphin, grouper, snapper, etc.). Leaving Key West for Diego Garcia...who could ask for more?

    Default At last!

Well, after 5 weeks of reschedules (9 trips in a row) due to high winds we finally got back out on the water... I'm sure the yellowfin are there... they just didn't like what we offered them! Still a bit rough to starboard of the channel isles. We eventually ended up going for more blue fin Trevalli just so we would have something for a catch!
Heading out this afternoon if the wind doesn't pick up again and we will see how we do!

did you stay in the lagoon fishing for the "gt" ? Or were you outside the lagoon? We always just seemed to get the black gt outside the lagoon! The yellows should be running hard this time of year! you will get some, i'm sure! Take the lcm out if you can also, good times! If it gets calm enough head down to south point and snag some yellows. Well by calm, I mean 25ft swells down at south point! Have fun!
