Default Lake Lenthall, Queensland, Australia. Fishing report May 07

Lake Lenthall report
By James Matts - Ranger Lake Lenthall.

Barra are still goin ballistic.

Excellent numbers of Bass & Barra are being caught and released at Lake Lenthall, which is now down to 59% capacity and the water temp varies between 21 and 26 degrees depending on the prevailing winds and cloud cover. Winter seems to be very slow arriving however it does look promising that this may be a wet one, lets keep our fingers crossed.

An unusual amount of surface action has been prevalent lately with some anglers reporting the sounds of barra " boofing " at certain times of the day around the lillies. One catch & release angler reported that he caught 9 barra to 830mm in a 4 hour session using hardbody lures which included a shallow running Lively Lures Mad Mullet in the blue / silver colour. Bass up to 490 mm have been taken on soft plastics, Cordell bibless minnows & Kokoda G Vibes in the shallows. Best retrieve for bass has been slow rolling the lure, whilst barra seem to attack lures on a medium to fast retrieve. The most productive area of the lake has been the southern end towards Wongi Waterholes or more specifically Doongul & Logbridge Creeks are the areas firing well. A notable catch earlier this week was a 580mm Golden Perch caught on a soft plastic paddletail grub.

A Stocked Impoundment Permit ( SIP ) is required by all persons over 18 years of age before casting a line. Money raised from the SIP scheme is used to purchase native fish fingerlings, most of which will not reproduce in the impoundment. Tick Lenthalls on your SIP to ensure that your money goes back into your fishery.

Paul Dolan from Fraser Coast Sport Fishing Charters reports that its been a busy month with clients capturing good quality bass & barra on lure & fly.

We still have a commercial Eel trapper working the Lake and to date ( 1 month ) he has trapped over 2200 kgs of live Long finned Eel. A massive 9.4 kg Eel is the largest taken so far, one can only wonder how many fish & birds an Eel of this size would devour.

The Fraser Coast Fish Stocking Association (FCFSA) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Monday the 11th of June at 7.30pm out the back of the Hervey Bay TAFE. All interested parties are welcome to attend. FCFSA are releasing 4000 50mm Barramundi fingerlings on Friday at around 11.00am, feel free to make the trip out for a look at the baby Barra, meet the hard working crew and to enjoy the recreational area.

Go on get out there.

Reports of huge numbers of Bass are filtering through, one angler reported to me that he had caught and released 32 Bass in a session yesterday.

Cheers
James
