Early Salmon Fishing With video.
Just thought I would let everyone see this video. Here is my son on the river yesterday playing a kelt or a spent fish, or slat as they are sometimes know here in Ireland. These Atlantic salmon have spent about five six, or sometimes seven months in the river system. Most Atlantic salmon in Ireland will survive and return to the sea, these kelts should always be handled with care, if at all. Unfortunately this one had swallowed the fly, but was released without harm to the river. You can see by the colour of this fish that is quite dark, taking on the colour of the brackish waters in the river. I would estimate this fish at around five pounds, it may well have been double that on its initial run into the system when it was silver and fresh. It was the first day of the season, very cold, and you can see by the foam on the rivers surface that it had been running high and fast. We had a few of these fish which put up a good account for themselves, and don't give in easy. Hopefully next time out there will be a good fresh one. Sorry about the poor quality of the recording everyone, it will get better. The fish was caught on a White River Rod 9ft weight 6# and on one of my flies (cascade) which are for sale on this site.
