My Imperfect Summers Day

The tranquil still of summer nights, as the sun sets in the skies.

The African sand martin’s soaring, for the endless hatch offlies.

The glistening sides of salmon, as they leap from pool to pool,

The busy mink that swim about, and bounce and play the fool.

The day had started beautifully, with two fish upon the bank.

And when I sit and think of it, its myself I have to thank.

Through rising mist my float shot down, to quickly disappear.

A sight to which my mouth reacts, with a grin from ear to ear.

The day it warmed and tired now, in midday I could sleep.

Even splashing salmon now, my eyes open, cannot keep.

I drifted to another world, fresh mint near in the air.

Calmly slept for two, three hours, without a worry or a care.

I started waking slowly, to a slightly cooler breeze.

The sun still strong, a beautiful song, it echoed from the trees.

I moved to where the splashing, had gently signalled me awake.

In hope to cast my line again, for another salmon it to take.

The quiet of the river running onward to the sea.

The barking of the otter, as home he heads with tea.

He caught a trout a salmon to, as I watched with sheer delight.

There’s one for me as well somewhere, but maybe not tonight.

If I don’t get one this evening, I’ll be back at crack of dawn.

And maybe when I catch her, I’ll release her back to spawn.

The sun is getting lower now, and nearly out of site.

The elongated shadows, reach out to greet the night.

As I nip a shot of rum and smoke a rolled up cigarette.

I think how lucky I’ve become, to just be here, and yet.

If I had a wish this morning, for anything, this I’d say.

I wish you’d been beside me, to spend this perfect day.

That's a sweet poem. I could almost hear the salmon jumping.
