Default What a Day

Went fishing early today Sat 7/7 on the River Moy in Ballina County Mayo, and over the past two or three days the river has been in flood and the grilse are hopping everywere. I heard of one visiting angler to the region catching six yesterday. the best being about ten pounds, hence the rush to the river this morning at 4.30am. These fish were taken today, all caught on the wriggly garden fly. i love catching these small fish of about three / four pound, they just never want to give up. I lost one good fish of about seven / eight pounds, and returned three to the water. I really am ready for the old matress tnite. Look in the Gallery for the three Grilse. Sorry cant get the gallery open, will post them at photobucket.com and try and bring them over at some stage. Anyone else had a real good days fishin?

Nice day fishing! I haven't had a great day fishing in awhile. Of course it would help if I could find the time at the same time the weather/water conditions are cooperating. Hopefully this week.

Dave ,

never seen something like them here in PA ....

Nice report and pics btw ...

I have had some good days ... and not so good days ... I will take a good day over a not so good day any day ....

For the most part im lucky ... its a long story but im disabled due to a Heart Condition .... well my Doctors want me to exercise and eat lots of fish ...
I have always loved to fish ... but since i got sick I fish more than I used to ... I am lucky that they didnt take it away from me ...

So to sum it all up ... I fish often as much as I can ...

Hey Mike thanks for the message, if there is one way I think, I would like to have heart failure, it would be fighting a 40pound salmon. Probably die very happy. I hope you are well enough to go fishing until you are 90years old buddy, and then when your not feeling up to it. Someone else will take you anyway. Hope your heart condition leaves you, and you get back to good health. Those fish are of the salminoid family, salmo solar or salmon. Grilse are just young salmon that have gone back to sea as smolts and returned after spending their first or second year at sea, or salt water. Most of the Atlantic salmon, unlike Pacific salmon, spawn in fresh water and then return to the sea. The first run of the season is usually the spring fish which can be from ten to twenty pounds, average size is probably around twelve(April/May) The next run would be the grilse,5 to 10 pounds, June July. And the Autumn fish would come in late August and September, usually darker in colour but can be as big as the spring fish.Hey keep exercisein and eating and catchin plenya fish pal. Gud Luk MIKE.

Hey Mike - we have them in PA (we call them Rainbow trout) but ours usually look horrible because they are hatchery raised in this part of the state. Go upstate for Steelheads (again - rainbow trout) for the sea run salmon

nice fish, sat was a nice morning for me aswell I didnt get up quit that early, well actualy i didnt sleep that night got off work at 12am and waited till about 5 and headed down to the river. caught 3(two were about a pound, pound and a half, thrid was prob a little over 2) one on a chug bug and the other two on a pop-r after missing two on my pop-r i picked up an ultra lite i had brought for fun and hooked into a small large mouth, I was using a floating worm that was 7inches and i believe they listed the color as earthworm(it was brown) i prob broke it down to about 4 or 5 inches dipped it in spike and rigged it on a jighead and hooked up with two more bout close to a pound. By about 11 the tide had changed and the fish had moved to deeper water to avoid the heat so i headed home and to bed
