Fortuately the Salmon have still been busy trying to get up the River close to were I live. But unfortunately for this big boy he didn't get past me during Wednesday evening just past. I again played one small fish of about four pound to the bank and returned it unharmed to continue upstream, but this one in the photo fought like a tiger at every opportunity. it took me longer to land this one (without landing net) which was around seven pounds. Than it did to land a fresh nine pounder last week. This cock fish however was longer in the system, and had taken on a darker colour in the brackish bog waters of the Owenmore. The salmon fell to a Yellow shrimp fly, fished on my usual seatrout outfit. I hate to say it, but I was only at the river for about half an hour before I hooked this, and was gone about forty minutes after I hooked it. Some luck eh.

Thanks for the reply Mutt, sure is nice to get them ok. Especially when they are really fresh, theres no better fighting fish for me than a wild salmon in fast running water and small river. Excitements gr8. Hopefully there will be more photos until the end of fishing in September, when the fish get a break from us humans pestering them. Love to let them go as well, just so fun to see them recooperate in the shallows and take off running again. Well Regards SDD

Love to catch a king on fly gear Mutt. Have to be pretty heavy gear though. Got a couple of friends who fish a lot here for salmon (Atlantic) and they book every year to go to Alaska just for the hell of catching 30 to 50lbrs to put back into the river. They hire a winnibego (big caravan) and spend three weeks up in the outback somewhere, take a few guns to, just to be on the safe side. Bears and undesireables if ya like. Regrdas SDD

Pineluretom, thanks for the mail. Will you let me know what your agenda is and where you will be staying and what sort of fishing that you intend to do. There is sea fishing depending on weather, river fishing for salmon, trout fishing for rainbows and wild brownies, and pike fishing. If you google nwrfb.ie, swrfb.ie and wfb.ie you will get a lot of info from there. North Western Regional Fisheries Board is the local board in my area. I do some fishing in the spring for salmon on the river Moy. But the deal is, that thanks to conservation you can only take one spring fish up to the 12th of May. There after you can take three fish per day and a total of ten for the season. You can catch as many as you want, so long as you release them after you reach your quota. That doesn't apply to rainbow trout in some fisheries in Donegal where I also fish. Anyway feel free to contact me for anything else. If you want to, send me a private message.

I've been to Alaska a couple of times, and did some salmon fishing up there. The first time the captain let us "mooch" for them, and that was a lot of fun.
The second time the guy had no bait, and only wanted to troll for them. So you sit and wait for a rod to go off, take rotation, and whoever is "next" grabs the next rod that goes off. "Tourist fishing." Half the thrill is feeling them start to bite and setting the hook. I'd make sure before I ever went again the captian I would be fishing with was willing to mooch for salmon, instead of just troll for them...
