Default Lake Lenthall, Queensland, Australia - August 07

There have certainly been some extreme highs and lows lately and as a result Lake Lenthall is going to be worth a crack for bass and barra come summer. Its nearly time to get the top water lures out in preparation for an awesome summer of amazing Lenthalls surface action.

Those magnificent rains have come & not a minute to soon. Lake Lenthall recorded a total of 110mm, while out in the catchment at Muscat Flat a total of 147mm was recorded which equates to around 5300 megalitres running in to the dam. Prior to the rainfall we were at around 51% capacity and are currently sitting at just under 80%. Burrum River weirs No1 & No2 are both at 100% capacity, with good run off making its way through to the saltwater section. This has provided the Burrum river system with a much needed flush and no doubt the fishing further downstream should be excellent over the coming weeks. On Sunday morning August 26th the new gates on the spillway lifted for the first time since being installed. Doongul Creek causeway on the Warrah Road is closed with a detour around the causeway being in operation due to water damage. Wongi Water Holes are also full. Road conditions are somewhat rough to say the least with many four wheel driving enthusiasts giving their rigs a work out in the mud, a select few have decided to try and make their own tracks.

Currently anglers are reporting excellent sessions on bass and barra, with diving lures from the Lively Lures range & spinnerbaits from the Bassman spinnerbaits range proving to be the red hot favourites and doing the job. Barramundi to 900mm have been taking plastics & flies worked around weed beds & structure. Land based anglers have had great success with eel tailed catfish, bass & perch, which are moving onto the new grounds looking for a feed. The bait fish in the dam are schooling with frequent reports of bony bream being sighted flicking around near the surface. Harwood Creek arm has been the sure fire producer recently.

Birdwatchers will be pleased to know that the Lake is host to an abundance of birds & other wildlife. Sightings of musk ducks, cotton pygmy geese, wedge tailed eagles, royal spoonbills are common. Other wildlife to make their presence felt have been the reptiles with red bellied black snakes being sighted near the waters edge, one angler reported a very close encounter with a 5ft plus black snake.

The two photos are of the new crest gates, which are the first to be built on a curved weir. They are designed to let flood debris such as logs go straight over without getting caught up in the structure and possibly causing damage.

Cheers
James
