I never fished dead low UNTIL -- I stopped to rib an old timer fishing dead low--voicing my opinion--poking a little--BAM--he landed a 42 lb stripped bass--ribbing me all the way back to the parking lot--WHY--I told him if he caught one I would carry it back for him--he who laugh's first--will not laugh last--in fishing.

I guess you learned a lesson here, huh? Don't make fun of old timers, they may know a few things about life and fishing.Apparently the fish are scavenging as the tide is going out, would be my guess.

the rule of thumb for striped bass fishing is that the best tide is high tide,... but as you learned ,... the best bet about fishing is that all bets are off....

fishing at low or falling tide can be very good if you have shallow water next to a marshy or an area where tall marsh grass is growing. during high tide the small fish are hiding and feeding back in the grass and when the tide starts falling, they have to move out . the predators are waiting outside the grass . in open water the tidal movement stirs up the bottom and the small fish and the larger fish start to feed. of course there are other factors that can have an effect but tides are important.
