Default Port Aransas 6-12 - 6-15

With the good weather coming down to the coast, Me and my dad decided to head down for a few days. We hit the Port Aransas South Jetty and trekked the 3/4 mile walk with all the gear to the end for some tarpon or king.

Conditions looking straigh into the gulf or mexico from the end

Was able to castnet some mullet of perfect size, around 6 inches, and put them on under a lemon rig on our Penn 8500 reels. Drifted for about 2 hours with no action when i decide to pick up the 5500 with some shrimp under a bobber for spanish mackeral. Only got some skipjack, which went in the box for later sharkbait. Soon after, Dad hooks up with a small tarpon, probably 20 pounds, which throws the hook after about 30 seconds of jumping. With the renewed energy I start fishing the lemon rig again. No action for the rest of the day, except seeing 1 other tarpon around 100 jump 3 feet out of the water about 100 yards out, probably busting bait but we didnt see him again.

That afternoon we decide to hit the ferry landing for some reds, and while trying to net some bait i catch this baby spanish mackeral.

Pretty cool. later on The Texas Treasure leaves its port.
We keep fishing through sunset with no hits, and decide to go get some grub and hit the sack.

Day 2

Conditions looking onto the jetty from beach

didnt catch anything ,but did see a guy catch a tarpon about 35 inches.

Later that afternoon we went surf fishing for sharks and after kayaking a whole skipjack out to the 3rd sandbar, I hook up with a nice shark, that bites through my cable leader. I think it was a bull by the way it fought.

wish I could of got it, havent caught that many nice sharks from the surf yet.

day 3

Hit the Packery jettys our last morning, in hopes of some snook and maybe tarpon. but upon arriving we find that the dirty water must of moved in overnight, and we only managed a hard head

Went to the Horace Caldwell pier that afternoon, and caught 18 sharks! Not that big, but sure were fun on light tackle. biggest was about 2 feet long.

This sucker ate a whole 2' skipjack!

one of my dads shark that ate another big skipjack, these things are aggresive!

It was a great few days with my dad fishing, and although we didnt catch anything really nice, I still had a blast and hope to go again soon after my Florida trip in July.

David, they were blacktips and we also caught 1 bonnethead.

Lemon Rig:

Take a 3-way swivel and your choice of leader material. Tie on a 3 foot peice on one of the side "holes" on the swivel.( the longer the piece the deeper the bait will be)
on the end of that leader line, tie a hook.

Take another piece of leader material and tie it on the other hole. On the bottom of this line, tie on a bobber. Then tie on your main line into the top hole.
Then, when it hits the water, the bobber goes up and the bait goes down, getting you as deep as you want easily.
