Default Best time to surf fish and what bait to use on Mustang Island TX?

Hi guys. I'll be leaving with my girlfriend tomorrow morning for Mustang Island in Texas. We got our surf rods, year-long fresh/salt water licenses and all the tackle minus hooks and spider weights. What is the best bait to use and what are the best times? Thanks!

If you are going after bull reds (best in September & April) use cut mullet or bait shrimp. Might want to use 3' wire leader if bull sharks are around. (if you use shrimp, you run a bigger risk of losing a lot of bait to hard-heads.

Yea Man My home turf.if you wan't bull reds, use finger mullet, or fresh cut scaled whiting/pinfish/sea mullet, any other bait fish (best bait is what you catch yourself while you are there)(go to a tackle shop on the island and buy a "Sabiki rig" bait rig )for shark use the same cut bait or cut stingray and use a 5' 120# or bigger steel leaderfor trout use live shrimp fished on the bottom, or live croaker for black drum use live crab, that about covers it. (frozen store bought bait is about worthless)

Default

Where are you located? Im in Kerrville and go to Port aransas all the time. For reds, net some finger mullet and free-line them or on the bottom.
