In still water I'd let it set a bit and just move it every now and then to attract attention. You'll want to suspend it though, don't leave it on the bottom.
when fishing for trout in a pond, do you must cast your bait out and reel it in like fishing for bass or you just cast it out and leave it like fishing for catfish?I'm using powerbait to fish for trout.

Hay, Well Bass is Diffuclt for new people, I would say for fly fishing? or just useing like a ugly stick. if you use a Fly pole you need to tie some around your fingers ' string ' win fly pole then back let some string out then flick again and let go all string just keep doing that. A trout could jump and get it almost if you are useing a fly dont let it sink! let it floatFor a pole like a ugly stick i would say cast then reel cast then reel if that dousnt help get a boat. but I would say to get 'Bubble gum worm ' As i would say then you should go to a river with fast water just fast and the waves fast water douse the rest all you need to do is cast and do the hard part bring the fish to shore! Also if you need anymore help pleaseemail meatHope this helpedGood luck fishingYour friendSmooth GuyHeres my email retrohelper@hotmail.com
Go to the Denver Post, they have a section dedicated to the outdoors. In the summer , it has so much about trout fishing. Good luck.
i would recommend that you just let it sit. use the smallest bobber possible. if you bottom fish, use and egg sinker with either a split shot or a barrel swivel about 14-18 inches above the hook. you can also use other bait in addition to powerbait
We used to fish ponds like this with power bait, here's the method we used. Put an egg sinker on your line so that it can slide freely along the line. Then put a split shot on the line about 10 to 12 inches above the hook to "block" the egg sinker. Use a size 12 treble hook and pack just enough of the power bait over the hook to completely cover it. The power bait floats and will suspend above the bottom whatever distance you have between the hook and the split shot. Cast this out and set your rod in a holder on the bank (a forked stick works fine). Hang a small bobber on your line between the second and third eyes from the tip so that the bobber hangs about 8 inches down when the split shot is snug against the egg sinker. Make sure you set the wire loop on the bobber so that it can slide freely on the line. When a fish takes the bait the bobber will start to move up as the line tightens. Pick up the rod, remove the bobber as quickly as posssible and strike as soon as the fish pulls the line tight. Hope you enjoy a meal of fresh trout.
Live bait, or powerbait, can just sit on the bottom or be suspended.
Depends on what you are using. If you use a small spinner like a Rooster Tail or a small Mepps, keep it moving. You said you are using powerbait. Let it sit there under a bobber. The depth depends on the depth of the water and where the fish are. You may need to move the depth around to find where the fish are sitting at.
With Power Bait, ya' just simply cast it out and let her set. A slider weight rig is the best way (line goes through hole in weight which when fish picks it up they'll not feel the weight of sinker), however simple split shot will do the trick, by the way Power Bait floats so she'll be off the bottom. I usually stick with 18" leaders (goin' to depend on how deep this pond be?) and say size #'s 8 or 10 hooks. Good luck to ya' and "Trout On"...2 links below are for Cabela's, regardin' different types of sinkers (weights)."Sliders", "slip sinkers", commonly known as egg sinkers.
for power bait keep it on the bottom and once in a while jerk it up use a bobber so it won't sink.
put an 1/8th oz egg sinker on your main line, then a small bead, and a barrel swivel. use about a 12" to 18" leader from your swivel to your hook. id use a single egg hook. thread your hook through the ball of bait and move it up your line about an inch. put on a chunk of worm or a single salmon egg on the hook then slide the power bait down on top of the worm or egg. this work just as good with out another piece of bait, just put on hook. i always use worms cause when they move in the water it attracts fish. get your self a forked stick jammed in the ground and cast the sucker to desired depth and let it sit. when reeling in do it really slow cause your bait will start spinning, causing the water to churn up around your bait attracting fish too. good luck.
The best way when using power bait is to fish it on the bottom and let it sit there. Every once in awhile you can pick it up and reel it in a couple of feet but then let it sit there again after you do that. That seems to work pretty good for me.
leave it...if there's any wind let it take your bait....if you don't get any bites....then recast
Use a jerk bait or spinner - you will catch 3x the trout that eat power bait.
I use a 2.5" husky jerk on an ultralight outfit (4lb mono line) - the trout cannot get enough!
