Bleeding Out a Fish :
Check to see if this is legal in your area before you attempt this ... Only to be used on fish you plan on keeping for the freezer .... Bleeding out fish : When you catch a fish just simply cut or snip a couple of the gills (make sure it's legal first of course!!) or you can stick a knife tip up at the middle base of where the gills come together in front of the pectoral fins and turn the knife sideways. This will cause the fish to bleed out. It's heart is still pumping blood through the gills so it will pump out all the blood in it's system and die shortly after. This works really well when they are in the livewell but tossed in the snow too. What this does is makes your fillet table almost completely rid of blood! Much less mess. It also makes the fillets look snow white instead of pink. If you don't bleed your fish out you rinse the fillet and it's still kind of pink. Maybe you or I can't always taste the difference but when you give away a couple walleye fillets they look impressively white and fresh! Some people believe they can tell the taste difference but it's probably just mental, maybe not? mike |
