Default minnow trap

Before fishing in the bay last weekend me and some buddies picked up a minnow trap hoping to catch some cheap and good bait, we had it soaking under a light at night for a few hours without catching a single minnow(using bread), Then today I took it down to the river with me to see if i could get anything there and i caught 3 small blue gill almost too small to use as bait, almost. i actualy caught more minnows by hand than i did in the trap. I caught them by hand by splashing them up on shore it was the first time ive tried it and i caught a good amount (very small too). anyone have any good tips/tricks/bait ideas, I know it would do better if i left it a longer period of time but i dont want to leave my trap for someone else to find.

I had the EXACT problem a while back. The problem was, my hole was too small for baitsized bluegill to get in, so only the very small ones got in. All I did was take a knife and make is about an inch wider all around. I got more and better fish this way.

YW, but be careful. In some states there is a law against how big the hole can be... In texas i think its 1.5 inches, but i was fishing a private lake so i made it about 2.5
