this spinning reel is inexpensive and pretty much the best reel I've ever used. Pfluger President 5.2:1 gear ratio, model #6735Xhttp://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10151&catalogId=10001&langI d=-1&partNumber=51666&hvarTarget=search&cmCat=SearchR esults

You can get a very good spinning reel for a lot less than $100.00. Now then, do you wantan open face reel or a closed face reel? Do you want a fishing rod to go with that reel? The sales person will help you with a good brand after you have decided which kind youwant.

I was going to tell you the Pflueger President is probably the best you can get for the money. Bassmaster is right on in showing you this reel. I've met a few tournament anglers that use them. My brother owns one, and it is nice. I would never go spend hundreds of dollars on a Shimano reel when this reel is just as good. This reel cannot be beat, you get a whole lot more than what you pay for!

Don't tell the cashier that you have $100! They will find you one for $99 + tax!If you have a real fishing store around go talk to them, you may not have the best selection but the price and the quality MIGHT be better.Mitchell 300 series is a good one and I think a Diawa or Shimano are good too. Which type also really depends on whether he is fishing for perch or muskie or shark....The Izumi Signature Series Spinning Reel from Shimano sounds good for medium light too.

As an avid fisherman and ex-marine I have a tendency to be hard on equipment therefore I highly recommend the Swedish quality put into every reel made by Abu Garcia. The Abu Cardinal C503ALB is one of the few reels I have owned that held up under fire. For $60 at bass pro your husband will be very pleased.http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10151&catalogId=10001&langI d=-1&partNumber=74045&hvarTarget=search&cmCat=SearchR esults

I need to play devils advocate here. When I buy a reel, I look for a couple of things. 1. What rod will it go with?2. How does it balance with that rod combination?3. Drag material, "Oil Felt, Graphite, HT100?"If you have a 12 pound rod, you need a 12 pound reel to balance it. A 12 pound reel will have at least 4 pounds of drag pressure at 3/4 lock up and at least 6 pounds at full lock.Oil Felt drags are the cheap and nasty but can do the job. Graphite drags are the most expensive.HT 100 Drags are in the high line Penn Reels and are in one sentence "Designed to catch fish."I would suggest looking at a Penn Reel with an HT 100 Drag, that balances with the fishing rod your husband already has.Sneak the fishing rod past your husband and take it with you and tell the goofball at the counter you want a reel that balances with the rod etc etc etc...Have fun.

Shimano & Daiwa are the finest makers of reels currently. Go to Cabelas and read the reviews for any $100 + Shimano/Daiwa spinning reel. They generally get a 9 out of 10. Personally, I would be very happy to find a Shimano Symetre ($79.99) under the X-mas tree. All in all Shimano/Daiwa/Plfueger/Quantum are all good makers of spinning reels. A suggestion: Get your hubby a gift certificate. He will appreciate that more than a reel. (Half the fun is SHOPPING for your new reel! LOL)
