Well it has been some time since I have been on the website, manily because of the fact that I have been out fishing a lot. Recently I have fished with two of the nicest people I have ever fished with. Friends who I have met through MFS, and who came all the way from USA to fish in Co Mayo Ireland. I was rather expectant as the water levels were getting lower and lower, from when Tom and John were to be fishing here in Mayo with me as part of their vacation. The Owenmore River (Bangor Anglers Club) was very low, were we were to do some flyfishing for Atlantic salmon, instead we opted for the lake, Carramore. Were there was plenty of salmon, but no one told them we were coming to get them.
Carramore lake holds large quantities of Atlantic salmon early in the season, March/April/May. So the prospect of good sport was exciting. After getting our required licences, boat and engine from Seamus Henry (Westend Bar) Bangor Erris. We proceeded to set out on the lake, I had seen a few salmon rise and tried to put Tom and John over them. To no avail, the salmon were not on the take as the lake was slightly sandy due to the winds the day before.
The lads worked hard at every opporunity to cast to any position in the hope of hooking up.
We took a break for lunch in a small inlet and I think the custard creams were the highlight of the day John.
After lunch we fished on into the afternoon, John did hook a good spring fsih but after a short while it threw the fly and disappeared under the boat.
It is hard to pick two days out of your vacation to fish anywere, let alone Ireland where it is usually wet all the time. Tom and John only think we say that to keep the English away HA.
Day two we decided that the River Moy may be a better option for a bit of sport, I booked a private fishery through a freind for Tom and John. Again we fished hard for most of the day and had s--t results.
Like I say its hard to know when to go fishing, but when you know you have to go at a certain time and date and the prospects are not so good what can you do.
I hope you had a great time here Tom/John and I promise to do better on your return. Thats if I don't see you frist out at yours.
Thanks
Regards
SDD
