    Talking Sum Fun 11-1-08

I looked at the Sum Fun's Tuesday count, and it got me pretty excited that they were running today's 3/4 day boat. Your Junior Intrepid Reporter decided to do that. Hopped in the car early, and got down at 4:30. We were soon joined by Saturday regular Hugh Vo (who caught a 25# yellow last weekend, as seen on the front page), and a few others. We soon got the clearance to go, as our other Saturday reg Lee joined us. Our crew today would consist of Captain Chris Pica, Brian Woolley in the galley, and the "other" Chris on deck. We headed down the line with 10 anglers.

Our first destination would be the desert known as the old Pedelton Cod Grounds, which produced very well on Tuesday. Started out on the anchor, but the conditions turned cruddy right away, and all we were catching was sanddabs. After a bit of that, we finally moved on to try a drift. The drift was actually not that bad, but that spot wasn't producing as well. Pica decided to head inside a bit and try it on the anchor. This spot was loaded with 8 inch rockfish - wide open. Some guys got some nice chuckleheads off of this spot, but it still was pitiful fishing. After a while of that, we headed in for some bass fishing.

The bass started flipping right away as soon as we dropped anchor. We were getting some nice ones, even on bait, as well had tons of small sardines. I used my Nuclear Chicken Gulp, and caught more, but of less quality. Then, Mother Nature turned on us again, and we reanchored. Nothing much more to speak of, so we moved one last time. The next spot produced some more bass, really nice ones, too. There were also a ton of short WSB, which were all safely released. I worked my Gulp the best I could, and scratched out a few more fish, but then it was time to leave.

Hugh won the jackpot with this nice calico bass caught on the Gulp.

Great weather, great times, lite loads, GREAT FUN!
